About Southern Illinois Film Club

Southern Illinois Film Club (or “SoIllFilmClub” for short) was formed by a group of cinema graduates from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale. The idea behind the club is to bring the talented individuals of southern Illinois together and create a network and forum of exchange between participants and enthusiasts within the film, video, broadcasting, media communication, literature, and, but not limited to, photographic professions. We welcome all, from beginners to industry professionals.

SoIllFilmClub meetings typically involve discussions surrounding films, images, and/or equipment associated with the visual arts, as well as workshops/exercises, critiquing work that members bring in, and pre-production, production, and post production on SoIllFilmClub projects. Each member of SoIllFilmClub is allowed to bring in their own films, pictures, scripts, etc. to get feedback on from other members. It is suggested though that this work is pre-distributed to active members before the meeting, and that those active members bring in notes, both creative and critical, that will help initiate a dialogue that harbors friendly creative discourse. There are no time limits for these meetings, and each member is promised to have a section of the meetings schedule to discuss that which they wish to discuss. SoIllFilmClub exercises involve creating videos that focus on learning different directing and cinematographic skills. For most of these, proper actors, art design, costumes, and props are not a priority; instead the group is motivated to produce cliché shorts, ranging from 30-45 seconds that try to capture a genre or accomplish a specific technical skill. SoIllFilmClub does also occasionally produce films though that focus on creating a professional product.

The ultimate goal of SoIllFilmClub is to educate one another, practice techniques, hone skills, and develop talent, while creating a network of individuals to work together on projects within the southern Illinois area. Below is our Charter and Member Contracts for download.
